Welcome to Fundamentals of Indigenous Data Sovereignty. This course is aimed at municipal staff working with Smart City initiatives, or at anyone who wants to learn more about Indigenous data sovereignty and how you can implement best practices into your work.

This course contains 3 modules. In Module 1, we will examine definitions and key terms related to Indigenous data sovereignty, and explore how Indigenous data sovereignty challenges the notion of open data. Module 2 will build on Module 1, explore the historical and current context from which Indigenous data sovereignty emerged, and introduce you to some common Indigenous data sovereignty frameworks. Module 3 will provide you with tools and actions that can be implemented into your work to support Indigenous data sovereignty.

Through the completion of this course, you should:
- Understand the principles of Indigenous data sovereignty and Indigenous data governance
- Identify the historic and current challenges facing Indigenous communities in regard to data sovereignty and data governance
- Understand how Indigenous data sovereignty can be used as a tool for community rebuilding and self-governance
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of organizational best practices for protecting and upholding Indigenous data sovereignty
